Bacteriophage research BMC
October 21, 2025
In October 2025, within the framework of a collaborative bacteriophage research project, the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre (BMC) is hosting Ukrainian researcher Oleksandra Mormil from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and Polish researcher Monika Dębońska from the University of Gdańsk.
On October 16, a joint seminar took place, during which BMC researcher Jānis Rūmnieks presented studies on the bacteriophage Nocturne 116 using cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). The data necessary for this research were collected during an Instruct-ERIC internship in Brno, Czech Republic, at the CEITEC Institute.
The international colleagues were also introduced to the opportunities provided by Instruct-ERIC in the field of structural biology, particularly in cryo-electron microscopy. Future collaboration possibilities in phage structure research were also discussed.
