Every year on 4 February, the world marks World Cancer Day. To highlight this occasion, BBMRI-ERIC has prepared an informative feature showcasing members of the BBMRI-ERIC community who are actively driving progress and innovation in cancer research.

The spotlight is on researchers and biobank professionals from:

the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre, FINBB, DKTK Deutsches Konsortium für Translationale Krebsforschung, German Biobank Network (GBN), Medizinische Universität Graz, BBMRI.at, Fundación MD Anderson Cancer Center España, IRYCIS, the Platform ISCIII Biomodels and Biobanks, and University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein.

These teams stand behind the data, discoveries, and scientific breakthroughs that make United By Unique — patient-centred care — a reality.

We are especially proud that BBMRI-ERIC has highlighted our researcher Monta Brīvība, who is involved in the project “The Role and Dynamics of the Gut and Oral Microbiome in Children with Malignant Tumours.”

The project aims to understand the composition and dynamics of the gut and oral microbiome in children with cancer, in order to identify microbiome-related markers that could help predict disease progression, treatment response, and potential complications.

Monta emphasises that the unique characteristics of each child’s microbiome are crucial for better understanding responses to cancer therapy and may pave the way for more precise and personalised approaches in paediatric oncology.
