Biomarkers - specific biological indicators - are a crucial foundation for modern personalised medicine, diagnostics, and the development of new therapies. However, only a small fraction of biomarkers progress from laboratory discovery to a real, market-ready product. To support researchers and innovators in advancing biomarkers from scientific discovery to practical application, EATRIS offers, among other training resources, an online platform and a set of tools for biomarker commercialisation – the Biomarker Commercialisation Toolset available at Biomarker.nu. This resource helps navigate biomarker development, regulatory requirements, and commercialisation aspects.

Biomarker.nu is a free digital platform that provides the Biomarker Commercialisation Toolset (BIC Tools) – a structured collection of tools and guidelines supporting biomarker commercialisation.

The platform offers several key support elements:

  • Biomarker Commercialisation Guide - a guide that helps understand the stages of biomarker development and strategies for bringing them to market.
  • Best Practice Handbook - best practice recommendations on intellectual property, business models, industry collaboration, and development strategies.
  • Biomarker Review Tool - a tool for evaluating and prioritising biomarker projects to identify the highest commercialisation potential.
  • Regulatory Tools - guidelines and a roadmap for regulatory steps, particularly related to in vitro diagnostic biomarkers.
  • Educational Toolbox - educational materials on biomarker development, commercialisation, and innovation processes.
Benefits for researchers, companies, and project teams

The resource is intended for researchers, startups, technology transfer units, and innovative project teams, helping to plan the translational path from scientific discovery to a real product. The platform provides structured and practical support, helping to understand how to successfully advance biomarkers through the commercialisation process, increasing the likelihood that research results will reach patients and the market.
