EU Structural Funds Support Available to Research Institutions for Conducting Applied Research

The Central Finance and Contracting Agency (CFCA) has announced an open project call, inviting research institutions to apply for European Union (EU) funding by 30 June to develop innovative technologies and products through applied research activities. A total of EUR 24.3 million in EU funds is available for project implementation.

In this call, only scientific institutions are eligible to submit projects, and they may collaborate with other scientific institutions as well as enterprises.

A total of EUR 18.8 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is available for the implementation of projects not related to economic activity, while EUR 5.5 million is available for projects related to economic activity.

This selection round will prioritise the development of dual‑use new or significantly improved products or technologies that can make a substantial contribution to strengthening national defence and security capabilities, both internally and externally.

Research projects may be implemented in the fields of knowledge‑intensive bioeconomy, biomedicine, medical technologies, biopharmaceuticals and biotechnology, smart materials, technologies and engineering systems, smart energy, as well as information and communication technologies.

The implementation period is three years, but no later than 30 September 2029.

Funding

The available public funding per project ranges from EUR 30,000 to EUR 600,000.

The total ERDF funding available for project implementation is EUR 24,372,119, with an additional EUR 5,000,063 provided as state budget co‑financing.

EU support is provided under the EU Cohesion Policy Programme 2021–2027, Specific Objective 1.1.1 “Strengthening research and innovation capacities and the introduction of advanced technologies in the overall R&I system,” Measure 1.1.1.3 “Applied Research,” second round.
