The European Social Survey (ESS) has released its complete Round 11 (2023/24) dataset, featuring data from 31 participating countries, including Latvia.

About the European Social Survey

The ESS is a cross-national comparative social survey that has been conducted across Europe since 2001. The survey is carried out every two years in more than 30 countries using face-to-face interviews with randomly selected residents to ensure sample representativeness. The ESS Core Scientific Team operates under the direction of Professor Rory Fitzgerald, ESS Director at City, St George's, University of London.

Round 11 Release

The updated integrated file (Edition 4.0) now includes comprehensive data from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. Estonia and Ukraine have been added to the integrated file for the first time in this edition.

The survey was conducted in 30 countries using face-to-face interviews, with the Czech Republic using self-completion methods due to interviewer capacity constraints (available as a country-specific file).

Beyond the core questions fielded in every round, Round 11 explored two key thematic areas:

  • Gender in contemporary Europe
  • Social inequalities in health and their determinants
Latvia's Contribution

The ESS Round 11 study in Latvia was organised and coordinated by a research team from the University of Latvia: Jurijs Ņikišins (National Coordinator), Mareks Niklass, Renārs Felcis, Anete Elizabete Melgalve, Staņislavs Šeiko, Ausma Tabuna, and Tatjana Bicjutko. Sample design and data collection in Latvia for Round 11 were carried out by the market and sociological research company Latvijas Fakti. Latvian data have been available since June 2025.

Ukraine's Return to ESS

Notably, data from Ukraine has been included in the integrated file for the first time since Round 6 (2012/13), made possible through the extraordinary efforts of the national team led by Tymofii Brik (Kyiv School of Economics) and Andrii Gorbachyk (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv). The data collection in Ukraine was funded by the United Kingdom via UKRI-ESRC.

Access the Data

Researchers can access the Round 11 dataset through the ESS Data Portal.
