Conference “Fluorides and Antibiotics. Balance in Prevention and Treatment”

About event

The conference at the RSU Institute of Stomatology will bring together internationally recognised experts from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP, Brazil), one of the world’s leading institutions in fluoride research, as well as Latvian specialists in the field of antibiotic resistance.

The aim of the conference is to discuss the evidence-based use of fluorides in caries prevention, biofilm formation and the challenges of antimicrobial resistance in dentistry.

In 2025, a fluoride analysis laboratory was established and equipped at the RSU Institute of Stomatology. In cooperation with UNICAMP, internationally recognised methods for determining fluoride have been acquired and validated, and research has been initiated on the fluoride content of toothpastes, the bioavailability of fluoride from toothpastes, the impact of expiry dates on the fluoride content of toothpastes, and the fluoride content of drinking water in Latvia. Capacity is also being developed to ensure the quality of clinical trials through precise control of the composition of products used in interventions.

This conference is part of a visit by Brazilian guest professors, during which we will further develop the cooperation already established to ensure the most effective use of the fluoride laboratory in research at all levels, from students and doctoral candidates to clinical studies. In addition to fluoride research, guest professor Pedro Ricomini is an internationally recognised researcher in the field of oral biofilms and antimicrobial resistance. He is involved in international cooperation initiatives that bring together researchers from Europe, North America, South America and Asia to study the mechanisms behind the development of resistance and to develop scientifically grounded approaches to limiting it. The visit to Latvia will also provide an opportunity to develop cooperation in this area of research, which is particularly important for public health and requires closer collaboration between dentistry, microbiology and pharmacology.
