Face-to-face event
About event

On March 20 at 10:00, the Discussion Festival “World Water Day 2026” will take place at The Moon Hall, Riga Technical University (RTU), Ķīpsalas iela 6a. Scientists, experts, and members of the public will discuss drinking water resources, the impact of climate change, and the availability of public toilets in urban areas, while aspiring water researchers will present their scientific research projects in the field of water. The festival will highlight this year’s World Water Day theme – Water and Equity.

“In Latvia, we often take access to drinking water for granted. Is water really available to everyone? It is important to discuss the sustainable use of drinking water resources and equitable access, as well as to raise awareness about public toilet availability,” explains Sandis Dejus, Executive Director of the Latvian Water Supply and Sewerage Companies Association and Associate Professor at RTU’s Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology, Institute of Water Systems and Biotechnology.

Access to safe drinking water and public sanitation is a basic human right, not a privilege. Even in Latvia, often perceived as water-abundant, it is crucial to critically assess the impact of climate change and ensure the sustainable management of drinking water resources. Water is not only an environmental issue but also a matter of social justice.

Discussion participants will include well-known opinion leaders, scientists, industry experts, and youth, such as S. Dejus, LU Faculty of Exact Sciences and Technologies lead researcher Inga Retiķe, weather presenter Martins Bergšteins, social equity and urban planning expert Ansis Klintsons, as well as representatives from the Riga City Council, Ministry of Climate and Energy, and other specialists.

The festival will be moderated by TV and radio personalities Māra Sleja and Mārtiņš Spuris.

The event will also feature the national selection for the prestigious youth scientific research competition “Stockholm Junior Water Prize”, where young researchers will present their water-related scientific projects. The grand prize is a trip to the international final in Stockholm, Sweden.
