Johann Gottfried Herder's 280th Birthday Celebration Event "Herder: Man and Earth"

About event
In 2024 the world, Europe and Latvia celebrate Immanuel Kant's 300th birthday and Johann Gottfried Herder's 280th birthday. Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason" (1781) and his other most important works were published in Riga, but Herder's years spent in Riga (1764–1769) gave impetus to his "Ideas on the Philosophy of Human History" (1784–1791) and to preserving the heritage of the spirit of the world's peoples and for research in the modern world. In celebration of Kant's anniversary, in September 2024, the Kant Forum will be held in Riga and, as part of it, the international conference "Mind in Riga".
In celebration of Herder's anniversary, several events have already taken place at the National Library of Latvia (LNB) and we invite all those interested to attend the upcoming events of Herder's year in November. But already on the last Sunday of August, August 25 at At 16.00 Herder's birthday celebration will be held at Herder's monument in Herder Square.Researchers from the University of Latvia and LNB (Prof. Dr. Raivis Bičevskis, Dr. Beata Paškevicas, Dr. Mārtiņš Boiko, Dr. Pauls Daija, Dr. Elvīra Šimfa) will participate in the celebratory event "Herders: Man and Earth" coordinated with the Riga City Council, as there will also be a reading of Herder's "Ideas on the Philosophy of Human History" (directed by Rodrigo Struka).
