Lecture by Nobel Prize Laureate Morten Meldal
About event
On Tuesday, 21 July, at 10.00, anyone interested will have the opportunity to meet Nobel Prize laureate Professor Morten Meldal in Riga — in Teika! Professor Morten Meldal’s discovery has enabled chemists around the world to connect molecules with previously unprecedented precision. For this work, Professor Morten Meldal received the Nobel Prize in 2022.
Professor Morten Meldal will give an in-person lecture at the National Research and Innovation Institute (NIRI), Teika Science Centre, Aizkraukles iela 21, Great Hall, 4th floor.
Meldal will explain to those present what his click chemistry, or “klikšķu ķīmija”, is, and how his discovery has accelerated the development of new medicines, DNA research and the creation of modern materials, ranking among the most significant achievements in contemporary chemistry.
The scientist is convinced that chemistry is not only work with substances — it is an opportunity to understand reality. In his view, organic chemistry is as complex as life itself, and humanity has so far discovered only a small part of its secrets.
The event on 21 July will also feature internationally recognised scientist Dr Phaedria Marie Hilaire, who will share her experience in promoting excellence and equality in science, creating an innovative research environment and developing the next generation of scientists.
