Ventspils University of Applied Sciences Lifelong Learning Centre Invites You to the Next Lecture in the Series “Science and Culture for Society”

The next event in the lecture series “Science and Culture for Society” will take place on 24 October at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences. This time, the discussion will focus on the impact of pandemics on the world, the One Health approach, and food safety.

The event will be held on 24 October from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences. The guest speaker will be Dr. med. vet. Aivars Bērziņš, Chair of the Scientific Council and Leading Researcher at the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment “BIOR”. He is an experienced scientist and industry leader whose professional work is closely linked to veterinary medicine, food safety, and public health.

Lecture topics:
  • How have pandemics changed the world? Has the next pandemic already begun? What can the One Health approach teach us?
  • Is my food really safe? Responsibility, risk, and science on our plates.

The lecture will explore how human, animal, and environmental health are interconnected, what lessons the world has learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, and how science helps assess food safety risks before products reach store shelves.

In describing Aivars Bērziņš, Academician Ojārs Spārītis particularly highlights his scientific expertise, experience in managing crises, leadership skills, and humanity, referring to him as “a scientist and a very normal person.” This characterization reflects not only his professional accomplishments but also a strong personality capable of combining knowledge, responsibility, and a human-centred approach throughout different stages of life.
