Open lecture “Consequences of Language Contact: Code-Switching, Hybrid Languages, and Language Extinction”
About event
On Tuesday, 10 March, an open lecture by Alla Placinska, lecturer at the University of Latvia, will take place at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Latvia.
The lecture topic is “Consequences of Language Contact: Code-Switching, Hybrid Languages, and Language Extinction.”
The open lecture is offered within the study course “Contacts of Regional Languages and Cultures” in the Master’s study programme Linguistics, Literary Studies and Regional Cultural Studies.
Due to globalization and processes of regional cooperation, language contact today is more intense than ever before. The mutual influence of different languages depends on several factors, including geographical, political, and economic conditions. As a result of such contact, various linguistic phenomena may emerge, such as code-switching, the formation of hybrid languages and pidgins, and in some cases the gradual disappearance of languages.
The lecture will take place from 16:30 to 18:00 at 4a Visvalža Street, Room 204.
