Seminar on the Research Directions of the PeatTransform Project for Climate Neutrality in the Peat Sector
About event
On 8 January 2026 at 10:00, a seminar will take place at the Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava”, Rīgas Street 111, Salaspils. During the seminar, scientists will present the research directions and expected results of the newly launched research project PeatTransform, aimed at supporting the transition of Latvia’s peat sector towards climate neutrality.
Latvian research institutions and universities have launched the significant research project PeatTransform – “Research- and innovation-based solutions for the transition of the peat sector towards a climate-neutral economy, promoting the sustainable use of Latvia’s natural resources”, co-financed by the European Union and the Republic of Latvia.
The seminar will introduce the scope of the PeatTransform project as well as its main research directions, including: – measurement and improvement of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission calculations in the national GHG inventory; – innovative solutions for the recultivation of peat extraction sites; – development of new products and technologies with a low carbon footprint and high added value; – socio-economic assessment; – recommendations for policymaking in the transition towards sustainable use of natural resources.
The seminar programme is available here.
Registration for participation in the seminar is open until 6 January 2026, here.
The PeatTransform research project is implemented by a consortium of scientific institutions: the Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava” (lead partner), University of Latvia, Riga Technical University, Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, Institute for Environmental Solutions, Institute of Horticulture, and the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics.
