Latest European Social Survey panel data published on the green transition, values and wellbeing

October 19, 2026

On 13 October 2026, the European Social Survey (ESS) released data from the latest wave of its CRONOS-3 panel survey, collected in 11 European countries. The data are available to view and download, including for researchers, students and all interested in Latvia.

Wave 7 of CRONOS-3 was carried out within the Social Aspects of the Green Transition (SoGreen) project. Fieldwork took place in April and May 2026 in Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Finland, France, Hungary, Iceland, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and the United Kingdom. Respondents completed the survey online or on paper questionnaires sent by post. The panellists were recruited at the end of interviews in ESS Rounds 10 and 11 (2020–2024), so their answers can be linked to data from the main ESS.

Many questions address climate change and the environment. Panellists were asked about everyday habits such as using electrical appliances and public transport, travel and heating their homes, and about obstacles to environmentally friendly behaviour. The wave also covered climate policy options, including higher taxes on air travel, a ban on short-haul flights and public investment in electric vehicles, and who would benefit most from such policies.

Panel data are valuable for researchers and decision-makers because they show how people's views and behaviour change over time, rather than offering a single snapshot. Comparable data on environmental behaviour, policy support and social ties help us understand how societies perceive the green transition and what helps or hinders it.

The SoGreen project is funded by the European Union and led by the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe European Research Infrastructure Consortium (SHARE ERIC). Waves 1–5 of the CRONOS panel were conducted through the Infra4NextGen project, also funded by the European Union.
