Latvia Participates in an International Forum on Ageing in Europe

On 22 June 2026, Rome hosted the international forum "Ageing and Demand for Care in Central and Eastern Europe: Determinants, Challenges, and Possible Responses over the Next Ten Years." The event brought together experts from international organisations, academic institutions, and public authorities across Central and Eastern Europe to discuss the challenges posed by population ageing and to explore sustainable solutions for long-term care. The forum was organised by the University of Rome Tor Vergata in collaboration with Fondazione Età Grande ETS and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Latvia was represented at the forum by Aija Bukova-Žideļūna, a lead researcher at the Institute of Public Health, RSU, and the SHARE Latvia country team leader. In her presentation, she highlighted key public health insights from Latvia, with a particular focus on demographic change and population ageing trends.

The forum brought together representatives of the WHO Regional Office for Europe, the European Centre for Social Welfare Policy and Research, the Council of Europe, the UNFPA, as well as experts from several European universities and research institutions. Discussions focused on the growing demand for care in ageing societies, reducing health inequalities, promoting healthy ageing, and developing sustainable long-term care systems.

Latvia's participation in the forum highlights the importance of national data in international ageing research and their contribution to evidence-informed health and social policymaking across Europe.
