Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology

About event
Description

The Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology (LHEI) invites visitors to its research home at Voleru iela 4, Riga, during Researchers’ Night, where from 17:00 to 22:00 visitors will be able to explore marine and freshwater research up close. This year’s theme is especially closely linked to LHEI’s work – searching for and understanding processes taking place in nature by studying the Baltic Sea ecosystem, water quality, the seabed and habitats, pollution, alien species, and the impact of human activity on the aquatic environment. During Researchers’ Night, this research will move beyond the laboratories, providing an opportunity to meet researchers, see the methods used in research, and try for yourself how the nature of marine science is explored.

During Researchers’ Night, visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the Nature Conservation Agency’s mobile classroom. With the help of interactive activities and visual materials, visitors will be able to learn more about Latvia’s biodiversity, the processes taking place within it, and the importance of nature conservation by investigating, observing, and taking part themselves.

Researchers’ Night activities have been developed using the knowledge, research methods, and experience gained through LHEI research projects BioFloat, CLEAN Beach, COCORICO, FUCUS, GEOSITE, GORSMART, GYPREG, LIFE QuietWaters, MarTe, MP-Arctic, and Sedi-Q, LZP-2024/1-0524.

The event activities will mainly take place outdoors, so weather conditions may affect both the activities and visitors’ comfort. We encourage visitors to choose clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather.

Paragraphs

The Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology (LHEI) is an agency of Daugavpils University and a scientific institute that studies the environment and ecology of the Baltic Sea and Latvia’s inland waters. LHEI conducts both fundamental and applied research, as well as marine environmental monitoring, with particular attention to the condition and long-term changes of Baltic Sea ecosystems, biodiversity, plankton and benthic organisms, alien species, pollution, coastal habitats, and the impact of human activity on the aquatic environment. The institute participates in Latvian and international research projects, developing knowledge and solutions for the sustainable management of marine and freshwater ecosystems.
