Polish bacteriophage therapy centre specialist visits the NIRI Instruct-ERIC research site
October 6, 2026
On September 25, 2026, Professor Ryszard Międzybrodzki from the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wrocław visited the National Research and Innovation Institute (NIRI) Kleisti Center and its Instruct-ERIC research site.
Professor Międzybrodzki works in the field of bacteriophage therapy, conducting both experimental research and personally administering the therapy to patients. He is an internationally recognized specialist and the author of over 100 publications. During a joint seminar, NIRI scientists introduced the visiting expert to their research areas and the institute's technical capabilities, followed by a presentation from Professor Międzybrodzki on bacteriophage therapy research in Poland. The seminar concluded with an agreement for doctoral students from the Polish side to undertake internships at the NIRI Kleisti Center in 2027. During these internships, the doctoral students will learn various bacteriophage characterization methods, including next-generation sequencing and the structural analysis of phage particles.
The National Institute of Research and Innovation is implementing project No. 1.1.1.5/3/24/I/006 “Development of Latvia’s research potential by strengthening the integration of the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre into European infrastructures and scientific networks”, within which the Latvian National Partnership Plan of the Integrated Structural Biology Infrastructure (Instruct-ERIC) is being implemented.
