Project PERIFORMANCE has been launched
December 10, 2025
We’re excited to share that the University of Latvia has joined the international PERIFORMANCE project — "Public Engagement in Research Infrastructures within the Cancer Mission: Managing the Complexity of Emerging Technologies", funded by the EU Horizon Europe programme.
The project aims to strengthen public and patient involvement in cancer research, focusing on ethical, legal, and social aspects, as well as the role of artificial intelligence and the European Health Data Space in modern biobank infrastructures.
PERIFORMANCE unites universities, hospitals, biobanks, policymakers, and patient organisations from nine European countries to build a common framework for ethical and inclusive cancer research.
The project will soon launch a call for initiatives supporting public engagement in cancer research — NGOs and civil society organisations will be invited to submit their ideas to foster participation and awareness.
The Latvian research team is led by Assoc. Prof. Signe Mežinska from the University of Latvia.

The cooperation between the BBMRI.LV partners is coordinated by the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre, which implements project No. 1.1.1.5/3/24/I/006 “Development of Latvia’s research potential by strengthening the integration of the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre into European infrastructures and scientific networks.” One of the project’s activities focuses on achieving the performance indicators of the Latvian National Partnership Plan for the Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure (BBMRI-ERIC), where communication plays a significant role. The implementation of such projects contributes to raising the visibility of BBMRI.LV.
