The BioPhoT project envisions the establishment of a long-term interdisciplinary research and innovation platform, which will implement research and innovation projects through the year 2032:

  • In the Smart Specialisation Strategy domain of biomedicine, medical technologies, and pharmaceuticals – aimed at improving access to therapies to increase life expectancy and productivity by developing technologies for the production of medicines, drug delivery systems, and vaccines; implementing drug repurposing, new drug discovery, and development studies; as well as identifying new biomarkers and advancing precision medicine solutions.

  • In the Smart Specialisation Strategy domain of photonics and smart materials, technologies, and engineering systems – focused on the development of optics, photonics, microelectronics, microfluidic devices, smart materials, data transmission and communication technologies, sensors and engineering systems, robotics, and Internet of Things solutions for the future.

BioPhoT and the programme objectives

BioPhoT is a mark of trust in Latvian science — as a sector worthy of investment and a driver of national economic growth. Over the next eight years, the state will provide financial support to develop research projects with practical contributions to the national economy.

Funding

The total available funding for this call: 6 million euros Maximum funding per project: up to 200,000 euros

“I encourage scientists and industry representatives to take advantage of the opportunity offered by BioPhoT and to lead Latvia towards new achievements in high-tech industries. In doing so, we will significantly strengthen our competitiveness on the global market as well,” says the platform’s lead and Deputy Director of the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis, Osvalds Pugovičs.
