Cultural and Science Event “The Voice of Māra Lake. In the Depths”
About event
Music, science, and urban waters will come together at Māras Pond. On 21 August from 17:00 to 24:00, the cultural event “The Voice of Māra Lake. In the Depths” will take place in and around Māras Pond, combining contemporary music, performance, dance, science, and community engagement.
From 17:00 to 20:00, researchers from the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology (LHEI) will participate in the environmental education programme “What Lives in Māras Pond?”, where children and adults will have the opportunity to explore the ecosystem of Māras Pond, the processes taking place within it, water quality issues, and the importance of urban bodies of water through creative and educational workshops.
At 18:00, during the discussion “From Pond to Lake”, LHEI researchers together with urban planners, local residents, and historians will discuss the past, present, and future of Māras Pond and Mārupīte – water quality, recreation, the sustainability of urban waters, and the place of nature in Riga’s urban environment.
Later in the evening, the area around Māras Pond will be filled with contemporary dance, concert performances, and music – the Jēkabs Nīmanis Quartet, the musical group “Tante Gaida”, Spāre Vītola, and other artists will perform.
The event invites people to view urban waters not merely as a backdrop to the landscape, but as a living ecosystem, a public space, and a place where nature, culture, and people come together.
