Opening of the Quantum Excellence and Competence Centre
About event
On 10 September at 9:00, the Latvian Quantum Excellence and Competence Centre – a new national-level unit established to strengthen the development of quantum science and technologies in Latvia – will be opened at the University of Latvia (UL) House of Science, Jelgavas iela 3, in the “Alfa” auditorium.
The centre will bring together and support not only UL researchers, but also specialists from other Latvian universities and scientific institutes, creating a unified national quantum ecosystem.
Latvian quantum researchers have long gained international recognition, and their work is regarded as a significant contribution to the development of quantum technologies worldwide. The new centre will become a single point of contact for researchers, industry representatives, and public administration, providing coordinated access to expertise, infrastructure, cooperation opportunities, and expert consultations.
The Latvian Quantum Excellence and Competence Centre will be a structural unit of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) of the University of Latvia. Its main task will be to implement Latvia’s quantum strategy, including strengthening the local quantum community, promoting interdisciplinary cooperation, supporting the public sector, and creating a platform for establishing new international partnerships.
The opening event will be attended by Latvian Minister of Defence Raivis Melnis and Minister of Finance Māris Kučinskis. During the event, a memorandum of understanding will be signed between the centre and SIA “Latvijas Mobilais Telefons” (LMT) to strengthen cooperation in achieving shared goals.
Attendees will be introduced to the centre’s areas of activity and development plans, and will also have the opportunity to tour the University’s laboratories, including the Laser Centre, the astronomical telescope, and the Bluefors measurement system.
