Practical Seminar "What to Do with a Table?!"

About event

The University of Latvia Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art Digital Humanities (DH) seminar series continues to evolve. This spring, a new thematic strand has been introduced – “Digital tools I use.”

This initiative aims to create a space for researchers who use digital methods in their work to share practical experience: to demonstrate their workflows, discuss the tools they use, and openly share successes, challenges, mistakes, and solutions. The new format emphasises the exchange of experience “from practice to practice.”

The next DH seminar will take place on April 24, from 15:00 to 17:00, featuring a presentation by leading researcher Ieva Vīvere from LFMI titled “What to Do with a Table?!”. It will explore experiences working with Skandinieki data obtained from the National Library of Latvia. The seminar will present experiments with tools such as Microsoft Excel, OpenRefine, and Nodegoat, and will outline key conclusions – what to do, what not to do, and which solutions might be worth reconsidering.

To strengthen LFMI’s role as a centre of excellence and knowledge in digital humanities in Latvia, these seminars are designed as open “work in progress” events. They are primarily intended for LFMI researchers, but participants from the wider DH community are also warmly welcome.

The seminar will take place in the Reading Room of the Latvian Folklore Archives at Mūkusalas Street 3, Riga, on the 5th floor of the National Library of Latvia. The number of places is limited (up to 18 participants), so early registration is encouraged: https://ej.uz/lfmi-dh-seminars
