Students from Latvian universities are invited to apply for the annual European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) Summer School by January 26. This year, the program will take place at CERN in Switzerland from June to September. Latvian students have this opportunity as Latvia is an associate member state of CERN, and several Latvian students have already benefited from this program in previous years.

The CERN Summer School welcomes bachelor's and master's students in computer science, engineering, mathematics, and physics who have completed at least six semesters of study and maintain their student status during the summer school. Students graduating in summer 2025 are also eligible to apply, but those who have previously worked at CERN or participated in the CERN Summer Student Program are not eligible.

The summer school lasts from 8 to 13 weeks, during which participants will attend lectures by world-renowned scientists on theoretical and experimental particle physics, engineering, and computer science. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit CERN facilities, engage in discussion sessions and working groups, and present their project work at the end of the program.

Several Latvian students have participated in the CERN Summer School in the past, with some continuing their collaboration with CERN and pursuing doctoral studies in the joint doctoral program in “Particle Physics and Accelerator Technologies” offered by Riga Technical University (RTU) and the University of Latvia (LU).

For 70 years, CERN has been a leading global scientific center contributing to groundbreaking discoveries in science. One of its most well-known achievements is the 2012 confirmation of the Higgs boson’s existence using the Large Hadron Collider.

Latvia became an associate member state of CERN on August 2, 2021, opening up extensive opportunities for Latvian scientists and students to work and participate in various educational programs at one of the world's most prestigious scientific institutions.
