About event
Words — no matter how long or short — can tell stories, conceal truths, sting, or uplift. With words, we can achieve and express almost anything. But each word can also be a story in itself, revealing our culture, history, traditions, geography, and daily life.
We invite you to play with words and explore them through various language games — from personal names and regionalisms to words found in ancient texts, other languages, and digital platforms. Alongside you will be us — researchers of words — ready to share insights into the scientific study, description, digitisation, inclusion in dictionaries, and preservation of language.

The institute carries out research activities in various fields of Latvian linguistics - dialectology and areal linguistics, onomastics, language history, grammar, phonetics and phonology, lexicology and lexicography, sociolinguistics, terminology, language culture, so it covers all areas important for language research, from sound to sentence and for the text. The institute prepares monographs, encyclopedias, digital dictionaries, collections of articles and magazines on various linguistic issues, it organizes conferences, seminars and public events, as well as helps to preserve the cultural and academic heritage by publishing selections of the works of prominent Latvian linguists, organizing public language cleanups. The Institute's research and work in collecting and describing the language is the basis of all Latvian electronic dictionaries and digital thesaurus.
