RTU invites applications for the Pauls Valdens Memorial Medal by June 6

The Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology (FST) of Riga Technical University (RTU) announces a competition and invites applicants to apply for the commemorative medal of the outstanding chemist of Latvian origin, Pauls Valdens (1863–1957) by 12:00 on June 6.

Internationally recognised scientists in chemistry, chemical technology, materials science, and researchers of the history of these fields who have made a significant contribution to Latvia in the aforementioned fields may be nominated for the medal. 

Candidates for the medal are nominated by submitting their Curriculum Vitae and an application with justification, supported by at least one of the following:
  • scientific and/or educational institution;
  • state or public organisation;
  • elected representative of academic staff with a doctorate degree;
  • full member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.

The competition application must be sent to the official DTF e-mail address dtf@rtu.lv,, addressing it to the Pauls Valdens Memorial Medal Applicants Evaluation Commission.

The Pauls Valdens Memorial Medal is awarded every two years to internationally recognised scientists in chemistry, chemical technology, materials science, and the history of natural and engineering sciences who have made significant contributions to Latvia in the aforementioned fields.

In 2023, the award was received by two RTU professors – materials scientist Jānis Ločs and researcher in the history of engineering sciences and chemistry Alīda Zigmunde, as well as University of Houston professor and RTU Honorary Doctor Olafs Daugulis.
