Discovering the Invisible World: Open Door Day at the Microbial Strain Collection of Latvia
January 29, 2026
On Thursday, 13 November 2025, as part of the regular event held every second Thursday of the month, an Open Doors Day took place at the Microbial Strain Collection of Latvia. The event brought together a diverse group of visitors, including students, researchers, educators, and members of the public with an interest in science and microbiology.
The day began with an introductory presentation by the collection’s specialists, who explained what microorganism culture collections are and why they are essential for research, industry, and education. Visitors learned about the role of microorganisms in medicine, biotechnology, food production, and environmental protection, as well as about the Latvian Collection’s participation in the European research infrastructure MIRRI-ERIC, which promotes access to high-quality microbial resources across Europe.
This was followed by a guided tour of the laboratories. Participants were shown microorganism storage facilities, cryopreservation systems, and laboratory spaces where cultures are maintained, identified, and quality-controlled. During the practical demonstrations, visitors observed microorganisms under microscopes, explored different growth media, and learned how cultures are safely handled and preserved for long-term use.
Throughout the event, the atmosphere was open and engaging. Many questions were asked, discussions emerged between visitors and scientists, and experiences were shared regarding studies and careers in the life sciences. The Open Doors Day concluded with informal conversations, highlighting the importance of making microbiological research visible and accessible, and strengthening the connection between science and society.
