Opening of the Swiss-Latvian research program "Applied Research" project LACHMAT

Face-to-face event
About event

The implementation of the large-scale Swiss–Latvian research programme "Applied Research" project LACHMAT will be officially launched in the «The Moon» hall of the Science and Innovation Centre at Riga Technical University (RTU). Within the project, scientists will develop advanced and sustainable concrete and asphalt materials and technologies. Alongside researchers, pupils and students at all levels will also be involved, enhancing knowledge and research capacity in Latvia.

The opening event will be attended by representatives from the Embassy of the Swiss Confederation in Latvia, as well as from the construction materials manufacturing and road-building industries. The event will offer not only the opportunity to learn more about the project, its objectives and expected outcomes, but also to meet the scientists and visit RTU laboratories, where innovations in road construction, 3D concrete printing and communication technologies are being developed.

The LACHMAT project will run until 2029, with RTU scientists from various faculties working closely together and in collaboration with researchers from the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa). This partnership will refine and bring closer to market technologies for road surface reuse and the inclusion of bio-based additives in asphalt production, making the road construction industry more environmentally friendly. Particular focus will be placed on the development of high-performance sprayable concrete, which will extend the lifespan of bridges and reduce the need for reconstruction. Work will also continue on sensor technologies embedded in road surfaces, enabling data-driven monitoring of surface conditions and traffic flow, and supporting the adaptation of roads to climate change.

To encourage young people, especially girls, the project includes activities for engaging school pupils and students. For example, pupils will have the opportunity each year to participate in a competition and receive a scholarship for scientific research work. Students, doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers will also be able to travel to Switzerland to work alongside internationally recognised Empa scientists and lecturers, gaining valuable experience, skills, and knowledge of the latest scientific and technological advances, as well as a broader perspective on international scientific cooperation. Already, four state-funded doctoral positions have been announced in the fields of construction and transport engineering, as well as construction materials and technologies.

Scientists will also collaborate with industry companies and organisations to ensure that the research results meet sector needs and are implemented in market.

The «Applied Research» programme is part of Switzerland's contribution to EU member states, aiming to promote scientific excellence, innovation and economic development. A total of €12.3 million is available for the development of science and research in Latvia through this programme, supporting the implementation of important projects, the creation of innovations and the strengthening of international cooperation.
