The Latvian Council of Science (LCS) has announced the fifth call for research applications under Measure 1.1.1.9 “Postdoctoral Research” of the European Union Cohesion Policy Programme 2021–2027.
The aim of the fifth call is to strengthen Latvia’s scientific capacity and promote the professional development of early-career researchers by creating opportunities to develop research competencies, launch and consolidate scientific careers, and foster cooperation between the research and business sectors.
The public funding available in the fifth call amounts to €4,850,590, including €4,440,334 in funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and €410,256 in state budget co-financing.
Funding of €782,514 is planned for research applications related to economic activity. Up to €970,118 is intended for the implementation of fundamental research, not exceeding 20% of the total eligible funding available for research applications.
The maximum total eligible funding available for one research application is €130,419, while the project implementation period is up to 24 months. The research must be completed no later than 30 June 2029.
Support for Both Fundamental and Industrial Research
In the fifth call, applications may be submitted for both non-economic and economic activities involving fundamental and industrial research.
Eligible research must contribute to achieving the objectives of Latvia’s Smart Specialisation Strategy (RIS3) or to the development of its areas of specialisation.
The postdoctoral researcher must have obtained their doctoral degree no more than 10 years before the deadline for submitting the research application.
For research applications unrelated to economic activity, €3,860 per month is allocated for the postdoctoral researcher’s remuneration, €1,000 per month for research, publication, training, and networking activities, while administrative and infrastructure resource costs are set at 6% of the postdoctoral researcher’s remuneration costs. Mobility, family, and relocation support is also available in accordance with the applicable conditions.
Applications Open from 14 September
Research applications will be submitted through the LCS PostDoc information system – https://postdoc.lzp.gov.lv.
The application process will take place in two stages. Initial research applications may be submitted from 14 September 2026 until 17:00 on 30 October. Applicants whose proposals are selected to proceed after the first-stage evaluation will be able to submit the full research application within two weeks of receiving the respective decision from the Latvian Council of Science.
