The overarching goal of the National Research Programme “Public Health” is to improve the health of Latvia’s population, increase healthy life expectancy, prevent premature mortality, reduce health inequalities, and enhance the quality and accessibility of healthcare services. The programme aims to generate new knowledge and solutions for disease prevention, as well as strengthen the efficiency and resilience of the healthcare system.

Thematic priorities of the call

The call will support research projects in six thematic areas:

  • Development of new knowledge and solutions to ensure access to healthy nutrition for Latvia’s population, including food profiling and labelling;
  • Improvement of mental and somatic healthcare services for children and their accessibility;
  • Development of evidence-based recommendations for improving publicly funded healthcare to promote cost-effective and high-quality diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases and reduce their impact on society and the healthcare system;
  • Development of new knowledge, methodological approaches, methods, and technologies to enhance Latvia’s human biomonitoring programme;
  • Development of new knowledge and methods for monitoring the spread of disease vectors under the influence of climate change;
  • Evaluation of health education practices and identification of opportunities for their improvement.

Particular emphasis will also be placed on the development of interdisciplinary and internationally competitive research teams, collaboration between researchers and healthcare professionals, involvement of students and early-career researchers in research activities, knowledge transfer, and the preparation of evidence-based policy recommendations.

The National Research Programme “Public Health” was approved by Cabinet Order No. 366 of 18 June 2026. The responsible institution for the programme’s implementation is the Ministry of Health of Latvia.

The project call has been launched in accordance with Paragraph 17 of the Cabinet Regulation No. 560 of 4 September 2018, “Procedures for the Implementation of National Research Programme Projects.”
