research collaboration

On 1 December, Ventspils University of Applied Sciences (VUAS) and the University of Latvia (UL) signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen collaboration between the two institutions in the development of study processes, scientific research, innovation, and knowledge transfer. The agreement provides for long-term joint initiatives to enhance the competitiveness of Latvia’s higher education and science, both nationally and internationally.

The rectors of both universities signed the agreement – Andris Vaivads (VUAS) and Gundars Bērziņš (UL) - confirming a shared commitment to deepen cooperation across various fields: staff and student mobility, joint educational and research projects, study programme development, and the creation of modern teaching materials. The cooperation agreement is valid for five years.

VUAS Rector Andris Vaivads highlighted: "This agreement is an important step that will allow our students and researchers to expand their opportunities and foster closer integration within Latvia’s higher education landscape. Cooperation with the University of Latvia will provide access to broader resources, laboratories, and joint projects, promoting the development of academic and research excellence."

Meanwhile, UL Rector Gundars Bērziņš noted: "It is important that we collaborate, while each of us develops and strengthens our own areas of expertise. Today, I clearly saw how strongly you are advancing your niche! I am pleased to have the opportunity to combine the scientific and academic potential of both universities. By working together on new study solutions, international research projects, and innovations, we strengthen Latvia’s entire higher education system. This cooperation is geared towards long-term results and offers new opportunities for both students and academic staff."

The cooperation also includes the development of lifelong learning initiatives, the creation of new continuing education and professional development programmes, and the organisation of joint cultural, sports, and academic events. Representatives of both institutions emphasise that the agreement will serve as a platform for more flexible use of available resources and for developing solutions essential to the higher education system.

After the signing ceremony, attendees had the opportunity to listen to lectures by VUAS Council Chair Kristaps Klauss and UL Rector Gundars Bērziņš on the topic “Strategies That Work and Strategies That Don’t,” followed by a discussion.
