Industry challenges encompass a wide range of science-intensive sectoral issues that affect multiple industry players and other stakeholders. Researchers' Industry Challenge: the opportunity to network with specific companies and develop prototypes based on real industry needs.

For companies, this initiative provides an opportunity to highlight the most pressing technological challenges, find suitable research partners and access the expertise of researchers without making an immediate investment. The process will be guided by BioPhoT mentors, facilitating an open and creative dialogue between scientists and potential industry partners.

Once the challenge is solved, the intellectual property rights remain with the research institutions, but industry partners are given the option to purchase the proven results in a way that suits them - through licensing, patenting or other collaborative mechanisms. For more information and to apply, visit the platform's website.

"Scientific results have economic value when they help solve real problems, and with this tool, we are creating an environment where science and industry can dialogue on real solutions. This initiative is a bridge between knowledge and needs for win-win cooperation. It is a tool that translates knowledge into action and ideas into technologies with a real impact on the economy and society," said Osvalds Pugovičs, CEO of BioPhoT.

Around 15 company-proposed challenges in the two Smart Specialisation Areas are already available to researchers, submitted by companies including Roche, Cellbox Labs, Veolia, ABB and others.

Biomedicine, medical technology and pharmaceuticals require innovative solutions for both laboratory research and patient care - from technologies that facilitate research to intelligent systems that streamline clinical trials, doctors' work and patient experience through AI-powered data analysis.

Photonics and smart materials, technologies and engineering systems are at the forefront of developing sustainable building materials and coatings, recyclable building and electronics solutions, energy efficiency and interactive systems for skills development.

“BioPhoT invites companies and research teams to use this opportunity to foster translational research, technology development and strengthen collaboration between science and industry.
