EU Fund Projects Under the Supervision of the Ministry of Education and Science Receive High Recognition at the "Stars of the Regions 2024" Competition

On Thursday, December 12, the Ministry of Finance hosted a high-level ceremonial event, "Stars of the Regions 2024," in the "Spīdola" Chamber Hall of the VEF Quarter. The event aimed to award and honor European Union-funded projects of high added value in Latvia, while also symbolically celebrating the 20th anniversary of Latvia's membership in the European Union.

During the event, three outstanding projects were awarded in each of five categories: "A Competitive and Smart Europe," "A Green Europe," "A Connected Europe," "A Social and Inclusive Europe," and "A Europe Closer to its Citizens."

Category: A Competitive and Smart Europe

  • 1st place was awarded to the project "Ringo," implemented by scientists from Riga Technical University. This project developed a unique silicon photonics technology enabling fast and energy-efficient data connections for future communication networks. This achievement not only highlights the strength of Latvian science but also contributes to technological progress across Europe.

  • 2nd place was awarded to the Postdoctoral Research Support Project by the Latvian Council of Science. This initiative supported young researchers, fostering the development of Latvian science and the economy.

Category: A Green Europe

  • 1st place was awarded to a project led by the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry and SIA "VLT," which developed sustainable packaging materials from natural fibers, biopolymers, and mushroom mycelium. This project offers an eco-friendly alternative to plastic, promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly manufacturing.

  • 2nd place went to another project by the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry, focusing on extracting micro-particles from birch bark compounds for use in eco-innovative products.
