Seminar "Data Visualization for Humanities Researchers"

About event

On April 8 at 15:00, the fifth seminar in a series organised by digitalhumanities.lv in cooperation with CLARIN-LV and DARIAH-EU will take place in Riga at 4 Oskara Kalpaka Boulevard and online. The seminar series focuses on digital humanities and historical research.

In the seminar "Data Visualisation for Humanities Researchers", researcher Anda Baklāne will discuss how visualisation skills have become one of the most important literacies in contemporary research. Their applications are very broad, ranging from technical exploratory charts to illustrated infograms and data art. The seminar will also examine the influence of data analysis traditions on digital humanities, as well as their points of intersection and differences.

Various types of charts will be reviewed, including bar and line charts, bubble and scatter plots, heat maps, geographic maps, networks, and other forms of visualisation, with examples of their use in research across history, literature, and the social sciences. Issues related to data preparation and the tools used to create visualisations will also be discussed.

Anda Baklāne is the Head of Digital Research Services and a researcher at the National Library of Latvia, as well as a lecturer at the University of Latvia, where she has taught courses such as “Digital Humanities and Social Sciences,” “Computer-Based Text Analysis and Visualisation,” and “Latvian Literary Criticism.” In recent years, her research has focused on the digital humanities, Latvian poetry of the 20th and 21st centuries, Latvian novels of the 19th and 20th centuries, and data visualisation theory.

Please register if they plan to attend in person at 4 Oskara Kalpaka Boulevard or online.

The seminar is organised within the framework of the project “History of Latvia in the 20th–21st Century: Social Morphogenesis, Legacy, and Challenges” (VPP-IZM-Vēsture-2023/1-0003) in cooperation with the project “University of Latvia and Institutes in the European Research Area – Excellence in Research and Collaboration” (No. 1.1.1.5/3/25/I/011).
