To inspire students to engage with science, technology and sustainable solutions, the Institute of Solid State Physics at the University of Latvia (ISSP UL) invites students from grades 5–12 across Latvia to participate in the annual competition “Solar Cup 2026”, which will take place on 23 May 2026 in Riga.

The competition offers young people the opportunity to gain hands‑on STEM skills by designing and building vehicle models powered solely by solar energy. Working in teams, participants create solar‑powered cars or boats, putting their ideas to the test in real‑world conditions.
“Solar Cup” serves as a platform where young people can explore science through practical experience – it is a full‑cycle engineering process in which students develop an idea and turn it into a functioning prototype. The organisers provide a basic kit – solar panels and a motor – while the students develop the concept, sketch the design, choose materials, construct, test and refine the chassis, wheels and other components of their vehicles.

This approach helps develop not only technical abilities but also creativity, critical thinking, problem‑solving and teamwork – competencies that are essential in today’s job market.
“For the eighteenth year, the Solar Cup will bring together young people who want to build a working model powered by solar energy and compete with it. It is precisely this kind of hands‑on activity that creates an understanding of how things work in real life and inspires students to continue exploring these fields. It not only sparks interest in STEM, but also highlights our institute as a place where new ideas are born and where physics becomes truly exciting,” emphasises Andris Anspoks, Director of the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia.
On competition day, participants will compete with their models in various disciplines on the ISSP UL grounds and take part in educational activities and lectures on renewable energy resources.
The “Solar Cup” brings together dozens of teams from across Latvia every year, demonstrating that young people’s interest in technology and sustainable solutions continues to grow. The organisers stress that no prior experience is required – the most important thing is curiosity and the willingness to try.
The event is supported by long‑term partners of the competition as well as new sponsors who jointly promote young people’s interest in science, technology and sustainable innovation.
