The Baltic States’ Academies of Sciences, in cooperation with the UNESCO National Commissions, announce the third joint fellowship competition for women scientists — the Baltic Women in Science Fellowship 2026.
Nine outstanding researchers from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania will each receive a €7,000 fellowship in recognition of their achievements and to support further research.

The aim of the fellowship is to evaluate candidates through national competitions and provide support to the most promising young women scientists in the Baltic States, helping them advance toward excellence in research. It also seeks to highlight the achievements of early‑career women researchers and encourage talented female students to pursue careers in science.

Applications are invited from early‑career women scientists who are currently enrolled in doctoral studies or preparing their PhD thesis at Latvian universities or research institutions, as well as from researchers who have obtained their doctoral degree within the past seven years and are employed at a Latvian university or research institution.

In Latvia, three fellowships will be awarded: two in the fields of natural sciences, engineering and technology, medical and health sciences, and agricultural and veterinary sciences — one for a PhD candidate and one for a PhD holder — and one fellowship for a PhD holder in the social sciences or humanities.

The fellowship competition in Latvia is organized by the Latvian Academy of Sciences in cooperation with the UNESCO Latvian National Commission and with financial support from the Ministry of Education and Science.

Applicants are invited to submit their materials by 30 April 2026. Applications must be signed with a valid electronic signature and sent to BVstipendija@lza.lv.

Fellowship documentation, including the Regulations and application form, is available on the website of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.

To date, six Latvian researchers have received the fellowship:
Dr. philol. Anne Sauka, Dr. chem. Daniela Godiņa, and Mg. phys. Līga Ignatāne in 2024;
Dr. art. Jana Kukaine, Dr. biol. Monta Brīvība, and Mg. phys. Elīna Pavlovska in 2025.
A recording of the 2025 award ceremony is available here.
