BioPhoT invites you to an Open Day as part of Deep Tech Atelier 2026

Face-to-face event
About event

The Biomedical and Photonics Platform BioPhoT invites all interested participants to an Open Day taking place on 13 May as part of the international conference Deep Tech Atelier 2026. During the Open Day, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the infrastructure, research activities and innovation development at the University of Latvia, the Institute of Solid State Physics of the University of Latvia, Riga Technical University and the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis.

The event offers students, young researchers, entrepreneurs, investors and other visitors a chance to gain a deeper understanding of how scientific ideas in Latvia are developed into practical, market‑ready solutions. Participation is free of charge with prior registration. More information and registration are available on the BioPhoT website.

Visitors will also be able to learn about the projects implemented within the BioPhoT platform, gaining first‑hand insight into research in biomedicine, photonics and other high‑technology fields. The programme is designed to foster dialogue between science, industry and investors, strengthening cooperation and supporting innovation commercialisation.

Open Day Programme (13 May)
  • University of Latvia   Jelgavas Street 1 and Jelgavas Street 3 | 11:00–13:00 Tours of state‑of‑the‑art laboratories (chemistry, optometry, physics, atomic physics), meetings with technology‑transfer experts, and an overview of innovation and acceleration programmes.
  • Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia   Ķengaraga Street 8 | 10:00–12:00 Tours of advanced infrastructure, including cleanrooms and laboratories, and insights into research on photonics microchips, quantum photonics, smart materials, batteries and microfluidics.
  • Open Day of the project “POLYCLAY‑UV”   Jelgavas Street 3 | 13:30–15:30 Meeting with the BioPhoT project team and an introduction to the development of POLYCLAY‑UV — an innovative polyphenol‑clay composite material created from by‑products of the coffee and tea industries, designed as a sustainable, multifunctional UV‑protection component.
  • Riga Technical University Science and Innovation Centre   Ķīpsalas Street 6A | 13:30–16:45 Networking with researchers, exploration of collaboration opportunities, and laboratory visits in biomedicine, nano‑engineering, environmental biotechnology and materials science.
  • Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis   Aizkraukles Street 21 | 16:00–18:00 An overview of the full drug‑development cycle, meetings with researchers, and tours of structural biology, drug design, organic synthesis, biotechnology and pharmacology laboratories.

The Open Day is an opportunity not only to explore the innovation process up close, but also to build new contacts and collaboration opportunities.

The project “Biomedical and Photonics Research Platform for the Creation of Innovative Products” (BioPhoT), led by the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis, is implemented in cooperation with the Institute of Electronics and Computer Science, the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre, the University of Latvia, the Institute of Solid State Physics of the University of Latvia, the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry, the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment BIOR, Riga Stradiņš University and Riga Technical University.

Project No. IVPP‑EM‑Inovācija‑2024/1‑0002 “Biomedical and Photonics Research Platform for the Creation of Innovative Products (BioPhoT)” is implemented within the long‑term national research programme “Innovation Fund – Long‑Term Research Programme”, financed by the Ministry of Economics.
