Daugavpils University's 35th Annual International Conference on Humanities "January Readings"

About event
The 35th Annual International Conference on Humanities "January Readings" will take place at Daugavpils University (DU) on January 30–31, 2025. Until 2023, this event was known as the Scientific Readings of the DU Faculty of Humanities.
The conference focuses on the humanities fields represented at DU, including comparative literature, contrastive linguistics, translation studies, regional studies, cultural studies, and more.
Each year, the conference brings together a significant number of renowned and emerging scholars from Latvia and abroad. This year, 84 speakers from Estonia, Italy, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, and Germany will present their research at the 35th DU International Humanities Conference "January Readings."
The plenary session of the conference will be dedicated to Dr. habil. philol. Zaiga Ikere, an emeritus professor, philologist, former DU rector (2002–2007), and Honorary Citizen of Daugavpils. She has devoted over 40 years to academic and scientific work at DU and is celebrating a significant life anniversary this year.
The conference will be structured into five thematic panels:
- English Language: Synchrony and Diachrony
- Baltic Languages: Synchrony and Diachrony
- Slavic Languages in Historical and Cultural Contexts
- Human and the World in Culture and History
- Literature and Culture: Process, Interaction, Issues
In 2025, the conference will be held in a hybrid format, both on-site at DU and online via the ZOOM platform.
The event is supported by the DU Association for Lifelong Learning, Culture, and Science Communication "Intellect Park" and is organized in collaboration with the University of Siena (Campus Arezzo, Italy).
Following peer review and editorial board evaluation, conference papers will be published in DU’s internationally indexed academic journals included in the EBSCO database:
- Cultural Studies
- Literature and Culture: Process, Interaction, Issues
- Language in the Context of Different Cultures
The DU Humanities Conference has been held annually since 1991, traditionally on the last Thursday and Friday of January. This tradition inspired the name "January Readings."
The conference was initiated by DU emeritus professor, Dr. habil. philol., and Latvian Academy of Sciences corresponding member Fjodors Fjodorovs (1939–2020) and Professor Joels Veinbergs (1922–2011).
