Maritime Synergy Forum
About event
On 16 April at 12:00 in Liepāja, at the Concert Hall Great Amber, an international Maritime Synergy Forum will take place, focusing on the sea, wind energy, and aquaculture in multifunctional marine development. The aim is to bring together policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs, and other experts for a discussion on the sustainable development of marine space, while also inviting other interested participants to register.
The forum is dedicated to the development of Multi‑Use solutions in the Baltic Sea region, with particular emphasis on integrating offshore wind energy and low‑trophic aquaculture within a shared marine space—specifically the cultivation of macroalgae and mussels, which use naturally available nutrients and simultaneously improve water quality. The goal is to encourage discussion on more efficient use of marine space by combining economic development with improvements to the marine environment.
The programme includes expert presentations on shared use of marine space, the integration of aquaculture and wind energy, and innovation development in the blue economy. Experts from Latvia and abroad will participate with presentations and discussions, representing institutions and initiatives such as RTU Liepāja, the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology, the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) and the ELWIND project, as well as international partners from Germany, Sweden, Lithuania, and Estonia. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about international project experience and current research, as well as discuss practical prerequisites for implementing these solutions in Latvia. The forum will conclude with a panel discussion on cooperation opportunities between the public sector, industry, and research institutions, followed by informal networking.
In addition to the forum, participants will have the opportunity to join a morning visit to the Port of Liepāja (9:00–11:30), exploring the daily life of coastal fishermen and the transformation of the former fishermen’s collective “Boļševiks” as an example of multifunctional coastal development.
Registration for the forum is open until 7 April 2026 via the application form: https://ej.uz/sinergijas_forums
The Maritime Synergy Forum is organised by the Kurzeme Planning Region within the framework of the European Union’s research and innovation programme Horizon Europe project “Synergy of Multifunctional Innovations for Sustainable Offshore Aquaculture” (SymbioSea Baltic).
