Latvian Research Institutions to Launch 56 New Fundamental and Applied Research Projects

The evaluation of project applications for the Fundamental and Applied Research Projects (FLPP) competition has been completed, and a decision has been made to award funding to 56 projects, which will begin implementation on January 1, 2026. In total, 623 applications were submitted by 30 research institutions (4 of them only as partners). 615 applications met the administrative requirements and underwent scientific evaluation.

The main goal of implementing FLPP projects is to generate new knowledge and technological insights across all fields of science. The projects will be carried out in all scientific disciplines:

  • Natural Sciences: 14 projects with total funding of €4,199,996.00
  • Engineering and Technology: 13 projects with total funding of €3,898,081.00
  • Medical and Health Sciences: 10 projects with total funding of €2,999,997.00
  • Agricultural, Forestry and Veterinary Sciences: 5 projects with total funding of €1,499,365.00
  • Social Sciences: 7 projects with total funding of €2,099,999.00
  • Humanities and Arts: 9 projects with total funding of €2,099,992.00

Each project has a duration of 36 months and is implemented in stages, each lasting 12 months.

In this project competition, the largest number of projects as the main applicant will be implemented by the University of Latvia, which, with 17 approved projects, is the most widely represented research institution. It is followed by Riga Technical University with 8 projects and the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre with 7 approved projects.

The total funding for the implementation of 56 projects is €16.8 million, which will enable Latvian researchers not only to generate high-quality scientific results but also to develop innovative solutions with a significant impact on society and the national economy.

The FLPP is an essential support mechanism for the growth of Latvian science, covering all Smart Specialization (RIS3) areas as well as the Social Sciences and Humanities, which have a horizontal impact.

This program not only promotes improvements in the quality and quantity of research but also ensures the integration of young scientists into research activities, which is crucial for attracting new talent and supporting their professional growth. The projects serve as a platform for development that not only helps retain the most talented scientists in Latvia but also strengthens the country’s research ecosystem in the long term.
