From November 1, 2025, to January 15, 2026, applications are open for doctoral scholarships at the European University Institute (EUI). For studies in EUI’s doctoral programs, the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) will award two scholarships for the 2026/2027 academic year through a competitive selection process. These scholarships fully cover living expenses, insurance, and travel costs. The scholarships support four-year doctoral studies in economics, history and civilization, law, and political and social sciences.

Founded in 1972 by the member states of the European Communities, the EUI in Fiesole near Florence is a leading institute for social and human sciences in Europe, preparing high-level researchers and policy makers. The institution makes a significant contribution to the development of European culture and science by promoting interdisciplinary research and fostering robust intellectual discussions through seminars and conferences involving world-renowned scholars, policy makers, and national leaders. Researchers have access to a top-tier research library and the Historical Archives of the European Union. The institute boasts a high graduation rate and strong career prospects for PhD holders.

  • Before beginning doctoral studies, an agreement is signed between IZM and the accepted doctoral candidates at EUI.

  • When evaluating candidates, the institute places the greatest emphasis on a high-quality research proposal that meets its academic standards.

  • Application documents must be submitted electronically to the European University Institute by January 15, 2026, at 14:00 CET.

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent qualification by August 31, 2026.

From December 1 to 4, 2025, prospective students can attend EUI’s virtual open week to learn more about its departments and research opportunities.

Additionally, on November 25 (from 13:00 to 14:00 CET), all interested parties are warmly invited to participate in EUI’s online information seminar “Prep Talk: Latvia” and meet Latvian students currently studying at EUI to gain further insights into the doctoral programs and research opportunities available.

Further information about study and research opportunities is available on the EUI website and the Ministry of Education and Science website.
