Music and science – two worlds often seen as distinct but closely intertwined. This connection is embodied by Dr. art. Diāna Zandberga, Vice-Rector for Scientific and Artistic Work at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music and a pianist who considers artistic research an integral part of the creative process.
"Artistic research is one of the driving forces of creativity, enabling new, high-quality, and potentially interdisciplinary artistic discoveries. This is especially crucial today—otherwise, the artist merely reproduces themselves," emphasizes Dr. art. Zandberga, who also serves as the Director of the Joint Professional Doctoral Study Program in Arts.
The Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music is the only higher education institution in the world where music is studied in Latvian. Dr. Zandberga stresses the importance of fostering interest in music research among young people from an early age. "Many students initially think only about playing, but when we delve into exciting topics during lectures, they change – and you can hear it in their music," she shares.
Currently, Dr. art. Zandberga's research interests focus on choreomusicology, a field that explores the interplay between music and dance. Choreomusicologists believe that analyzing the relationships between sound and movement in various performing arts can deepen our understanding of perceptual sensitivity, cultural processes, and interpersonal dynamics.
Dr. art. Zandberga's research spans artistic inquiry, piano music, and choreomusical performances.
She has participated in international artistic research conferences and performed concerts and lectures at leading universities and music academies across Europe and the United States.
A scientific approach to music helps us understand its impact on individuals, culture, and emotions, offering new opportunities for the synergy between art and science. Through her dedicated work, Dr. art. Zandberga advances the development of artistic research and its integration into the international academic and creative community.
About the calendar "Research Latvia 2025"
This initiative is implemented as part of the European Regional Development Fund Project No. 1.1.1.1/1/24/I/001, “More Effective and Smarter Implementation and Management of Latvia's Science Policy”, led by the Ministry of Education and Science.
The project creators include the creative team of SIA “Entuziasti Digital”, featuring Mārtiņš Pavasaris, video director Kristaps Mozgirs, and photographer Mārtiņš Goldbergs – as well as the researchLatvia team.
Since 2018, the science calendar “Research Latvia” and travelling exhibition have been produced to promote the achievements of Latvian scientists, enhance public understanding of the importance of science, and inspire young people to pursue careers in science.
