Latvian Startup “Spruceful” Develops Smart Device to Combat the Eight-Toothed Bark Beetle

In response to the mass outbreak of the eight-toothed spruce bark beetle, the brand "Spruceful" is developing an innovative solution by applying Internet of Things (IoT) technology — equipping traps with a module containing sensors that send data on trap fill levels to the user. Due to the beetle outbreak, economic activity must be restricted across the entire country this year, and measures must be taken to protect valuable spruce stands. However, this new solution will make it possible to detect pest outbreaks in a timely manner, optimize forest monitoring, and reduce damage. The solution is being developed by participants of Latvia’s startup education program “StartSchool.” Although none of them have professional experience in forestry, they care deeply about Latvia's nature and its future.

“Each year, the eight-toothed bark beetle destroys more than 32 million cubic meters of timber — enough to build wooden houses for all residents of Latvia. Right now, humanity is losing the battle against this beetle, but our mission is to restore ecological balance in the forests and ensure that even our grandchildren won't be left without a Christmas tree,” emphasizes Jānis Binders, the idea’s author and a data analyst.

Kristofs Blaus, co-founder of “StartSchool,” adds:

“Forest protection is important for all of society, not just for landowners. We have high hopes for this team because they are addressing a global issue. The solution has a specific target audience with a clear motivation to pay for the tool. The team has already taken practical steps from idea to real prototypes in Latvian forests. While the hardest part is still ahead and it will require a lot of motivation and perseverance, this truly has the potential to become a successful company that Latvia can be proud of.”

The idea for this solution emerged while interviewing representatives from the agriculture and forestry sectors, during which one of the most pressing issues — damage caused by bark beetles — came to light. The eight-toothed spruce bark beetle is the most destructive conifer pest in Latvia, capable of causing more damage to spruce stands than all other forest pests combined, which is why it deserves greater attention. The outbreak has affected not only Latvia but nearly all countries in the Northern Hemisphere — from Germany and Norway to Japan and Canada.

The innovative solution involves improving existing pheromone traps by equipping them with sensors and a communication module that automatically sends users information about trap fill levels and other key environmental factors under any weather conditions. This allows forest owners or supervisors to monitor the situation remotely. The data transmission coverage of the “Spruceful” solution is said to be four times greater than that of mobile networks, making it usable even in remote clearings and isolated locations.

Currently, the brand is focusing on adapting the solution to already installed pheromone traps. In the future, it aims to work on early pest detection without using artificially synthesized pheromones, and the innovation also shows potential in other sectors.
