International experts have given a high evaluation to the quality management system of Riga Technical University (RTU), confirming its compliance with the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) model and awarding it a five-star rating, “Recognised by EFQM – Sustainable Performance.” This year, such a high distinction was granted to only 15 out of 87 assessed educational institutions worldwide. RTU received the highest recognition for the leadership of its management team in change management, cooperation with industry and public administration partners, improvement of the study process, progress toward excellence in science, and management of innovation and technology transfer.

"With determined leadership and a culture open to learning and innovation, RTU is a modern, future-oriented university that not only adapts to change but also shapes it," emphasises Vanda Novokšonova, Deputy Chair of the Board of the Latvian Quality Society.

In the previous evaluation period in 2022, RTU received four EFQM stars; however, this year, international experts from Italy, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Estonia concluded that RTU has significantly improved its performance, demonstrating readiness for further growth.

"Quality is a process that never ends. RTU is currently undergoing a process of change, but changes must be of high quality, and experts have recognised RTU’s performance in this regard. Universities worldwide are currently facing many challenges due to international politics and other circumstances, so we are especially pleased that, in extreme competition, we have all together succeeded in earning five stars that attest to quality," says RTU Rector Tālis Juhna.

International experts reviewed RTU’s performance through a self-assessment report and, in October, gathered the necessary evaluation information through interviews with RTU management and staff. Their conclusion is unequivocal – RTU’s management team is united in leading change, with clear goals and a well-defined strategy to achieve them.

Experts also highly valued the internal changes implemented at RTU, including the consolidation of faculties, as well as external consolidation through the integration of the Latvian Maritime Academy and Maritime School, Liepaja Maritime College, Liepaja Academy, and Rezekne Academy into the university. The experts praised the productive cooperation between RTU’s management team and the RTU Council, as well as the establishment of the International Advisory Board, which supports the university’s path toward excellence in science.

In assessing the study process, experts commended its improvement and RTU’s contribution to educating school pupils by offering classes at the RTU Children and Youth University, the University for Future Engineers, and the RTU Curiosity Centre “Futurimo Riga.” RTU’s focus on attracting young talent was also praised, as the university has been developing a Talent Programme for students for several years, providing opportunities for personal development.

RTU has received recognition for the progress already achieved toward scientific excellence, including establishing tenure-track professorships, supporting doctoral students, and focusing on excellence in scientific publications. RTU’s performance in innovation was also highly rated, particularly in developing innovative technologies that contribute to the growth of the national economy.
