On 5 November this year, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) will host Innovation Day, bringing together researchers, entrepreneurs, students and cooperation partners. At the event, university researchers will present emerging solutions in diagnostics, drug development and sport, while entrepreneurs and innovation experts will share their experience and discuss the importance of cooperation in putting innovative ideas into practice. Innovation Day will take place from 9:00 to 17:00 in the RSU Great Hall at 16 Dzirciema Street, Riga.
The first part of the day, “Ideas and Business”, will be dedicated to idea development and entrepreneurship. Roberts Alhimionoks, Executive Director of the Latvian Startup Association Startin.LV, will talk about the journey from idea to business, while Lauris Vidzis, founder of Longevity Catalyst, will focus on mistakes and the courage to continue pursuing one’s vision. The programme will also include a discussion on sport and entrepreneurship, an experience story from a health start-up, and an introduction to the support offered by the RSU Business Incubator for idea creators.
From 13:30, in the “Science and Innovation” section, RSU researchers will present projects with the potential to improve disease diagnostics, therapy and athletes’ health monitoring. The OsteoXplore project team will introduce the use of artificial intelligence for assessing osteoporosis risk in dental 3D X-ray images, while LiqBio-BC researchers will explain the potential of urinary biomarkers in bladder cancer diagnostics.
The programme will also feature research on monitoring microcirculation to assess a patient’s condition, the effects of oxygen deprivation on cancer cells, and the potential of computer modelling in drug development. The sports research presentations will focus on athletes’ health and physical load, including the use of smart textile solutions for injury prevention.
“Innovation at a university begins with the ability to see how our knowledge can help solve real challenges faced by the sector. That is why we teach innovation creation both to students from their very first year of studies and to researchers, and we are pleased with the diversity and quality of the results achieved. However, emerging solutions should not be kept hidden away; they need to be talked about. Innovation Day is a platform where students, researchers, entrepreneurs, representatives of public administration and hospitals can meet in one place, exchange ideas and build long-term cooperation,” emphasises Agnese Oļševska, Director of the RSU Innovation Centre.
Innovation Day will be complemented by two satellite events: the Demo Day of the RSU Business Incubator’s pre-incubation programme, where student teams will present their business ideas, and a practical workshop, “AI in Sport”, which will allow students to try out artificial intelligence tools for processing sports data.
Participation in the event is free of charge with prior registration at https://luma.com/u7nfhuhv, where the programme is also available. The main-stage programme will be held in Latvian with simultaneous interpretation into English.
